Islam Is Not Just a Religion

Most Westerners think of religion as a private matter — something that shapes inner life and personal ethics but stays separate from law, politics, and public life. When they encounter Islam, they apply the same assumption. This is one of the most significant misunderstandings a Christian can bring into a conversation with a Muslim neighbor, because Islam was never designed to be a private faith.

Islam is a comprehensive system governing every dimension of life — religion, governance, and the ordering of everyday existence — understood not as separate departments but as one unified whole. Where Christianity draws a distinction between the things of God and the things of Caesar, Islam collapses that distinction entirely.
